WINDHILL WESLEYAN

Additional Notes
The information in these Notes is an effort to unearth the connections among the people interred here. The sources were:
* Interment Book held by Bradford Bereavement Service;
* Ancestry, Family Search and Probate Search websites;
* Calverley Info website (contains a transcription from the Interment Book, which was used as the source of the database);
* Newspaper articles, inquest reports etc.;
* Official General Register Office certificates - because of the cost, these have only occasionally been purchased. The use of the quarterly prefixes Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec indicates that only the GRO Index has been consulted.
Where there are no official sources, some of the information provided may be speculative.
A large number of people who were interred here have no visible graves: either no gravestone was ever commissioned, or the stones are buried, or they were removed.
A few people who are noted on the stones were buried elsewhere.
Most families came from Windhill Crag or Wood End. A number came from Shipley, possibly because of limited burial provision at its Wesleyan Providence Chapel. [The earliest version of this chapel was located in Otley Road, opposite Viewcroft Road. It had a small burial ground of about 960 ft2 that contained 14 headstones when Arthur Blackburn transcribed them in 1931.]
Some of the information concerns infants who were noted on pages in the Interment Book entitled “Unbaptised Infants Interred” and also as notes (some undated) scribbled inside the back cover and on the flyleaf of the same Book.
* Names in red bold text refer to people noted on the stones.
* Names in black bold text refer to those who were interred in the Front Burial Ground (as noted in the Interment Book), but may not have a visible grave.
* A1, B2 etc identifies the graves or plots and was the notation used in the Interment Book.
* Numbers in brackets (No 131 etc) were used in the Interment Book to identify individuals.

Joseph Halliday was born abt 1816 and married Betty Watmough at Calverley PC on 20 December 1835. Although the Interment Book states that Joseph was the 'Husband of Mary', the 1851 Windhill census shows him aged 35 and married to Betty, aged 37. Joseph Halliday died in Saltaire on 6 September 1869 aged 53.
Betty was born Betty Simes Watmough on 10 June 1814 to Mary Watmough, a spinster. She died in Sep 1877 in Bradford and was evidently interred somewhere other than Windhill.
Mary Watmough, Betty's mother, was baptised on 24 July 1785 to William Watmough. She may have been a sister of Hannah Watmough (No 478, C2). In the 1851 census, Mary, who had been a nurse, was 'Unmarried'. Martin and the other children of Betty and Joseph Halliday were described as her grandchildren. She died on 29 September 1852 aged 67.
B3 - DICKINSON / EWBANK / FAWCETT / JAGGER / MOREHOUSE / RYDER / WILSON
There is no visible grave at B3.
The people interred here appear to be unrelated.
Sarah Jane Dickinson
She was born in Jun 1847 and died on 4 February 1849 aged 1 year 8 months.
Robert Dickinson or Dixon, her father, was baptised in Bolton on 30 May 1819. A gas fitter, he married Ann Walton in Halifax on 11 November 1844. He died on 6 May 1887 aged 67. He was listed in the Interment Book, but had no grave number assigned to him. He has been placed here at B3, along with his daughter.
Catherine Ewbank
Born abt 1813, her father was Andrew Ewbank of Cowton, Northallerton. She was the sister of Elizabeth Ewbank (No 473, F8), who married Samuel Ackroyd on 07 July 1833. She died on 27 April 1836 aged 28.
Margaret Fawcett, whose age was not recorded but may have been born in 1841, was a little girl whose father was a plate layer on the Leeds and Bradford railway. On 18 December 1849, he was working near Bolton Bridge when his daughter decided to take him his dinner. A report in the Bradford Observer says she saw the up train approaching and stood on the opposite side of the track to let it past; “while doing so, a down train passed over her”.
The location of Bolton Bridge is uncertain: it usually refers to a road bridge over the River Wharfe near Bolton Abbey. The Abbey was near the Ilkley-Skipton line, which was proposed in 1847, but was not opened (by the Midland Railway) until 1888. However, the Leeds and Bradford Railway, which ran from Bradford Kirkgate to Leeds via Shipley, was opened in 1846; it is possible that the bridge carrying Queens Road over the line was known as Bolton Bridge in the late 1840s: it is near the Bolton Lane / Queens Road junction.
William Henry Jagger
He was born in Halifax in Dec 1848 to Samuel Jagger, a miner, and Sarah Crabtree. He died on 4 November 1849 aged 1 year 8 months. The Jaggers had moved to Shipley by 1850.

The headstone has fallen from its plinth and is resting on the ground within the stone sub that surrounds both BM and B5.
Hannah Bella Cordingley was born in Apr 1860 and died on 6 May 1876 aged 15. She was interred in BM, according to the Interment Book, but her name is inscribed on the stone that was erected on B5. She was the daughter of Joseph Cordingley, a warehouseman, and Ann Hutton, who married on 5 November 1859.
Joseph Cordingley was the son of Joseph Cordingley (No 452, BM) and Ann Tommis. He was born abt 1829 and died on 21 April 1902 aged 74.
Ann Hutton / Cordingley was born abt 1832 and died on 28 March 1895 aged 65.
Also interred in B5, but not shown on the headstone, were:
Elizabeth Bottomley / Cordingley, who was born abt 1831, was the first wife of William Cordingley, the brother of Joseph (No 559, B5 above), whom she married in Bradford on 13 May 1850. William was a weaver. Elizabeth died of inflamation of the lungs on 13 March 1851 aged 20, perhaps connected to the recent birth of her son Robert.
Robert Cordingley was born in Mar 1851 and died on 14 March 1851, surviving only 14 days.
The following was the son of Alice Unwin and Samuel Cordingley (the son of Joseph Cordingley (No 452, BM) and Ann Tommis), who married on 10 July 1853:
Robert Cordingley was born in Sep 1856 and died on 24 September 1856 aged 2 months.
The following was the son of William Cordingley, who married (2) Sarah Kaye on 17 May 1857:
Tom Cordingley was born in Sep 1857 and died on 24 September 1857 aged 7 weeks.

Grace Firth / Cordingley, born abt 1833, died on 17 October 1894 aged 71.
There is no visble grave at B6.
David Mellor was mentioned twice in the Interment Book as the father both of an infant girl, who died in 1838 and of Sarah, who died in 1843. David was not buried at B6, but died in Eccleshill on 1 June 1890 aged 89. A clothier, he married Hannah Jennings on 5 June 1825. One of the witnesses was George Bateson, husband of Ann Farrer (No 264).
Hannah Jennings / Mellor died in Bradford in Mar 1875 aged 67.
They had at least 8 children, including Thomas in 1829 (he married Priscilla Murgatroyd in 1851).
David Mellor’s daughter died on 13 December 1838 aged 1 day.
Additional information:
She was recorded only in the Unbaptised Infants Interred section of the Interment Book, and not in the GRO Registers. The fact that she was David Mellor's daughter, interred at B6, suggests that she was borne by Hannah Jennings, his wife. However, David's son, Joseph Jennings Mellor, whose mother was given as Hannah Jennings (on his birth certificate), was born 4 months earlier, on 14 August 1838. If they were twins, that's rather a long gap. Perhaps others can think of a more credible explanation.
Sarah Mellor was born abt 1826 and died on 25 August 1843 aged 17.
Edward Jennings Mellor was the son of Thomas Mellor and Priscilla Murgatroyd / Mellor. He was born in Jun 1852 and died on 30 August 1852 aged 11 weeks.
This small stone is presently positioned at the B6 location. The Interment Book has the burial at B7.
Stephen Skirrow died on 17 January 1838 aged 83, so was born abt 1755. He was a clothier, a Methodist Leader on the Shipley Circuit and he lived in Rose-Hill (Wrose). He is thought to have married (1) Mary Wommersley on 15 January 1784 in Bradford. After she died on 13 June 1787, he married (2) Sarah Jowett on 7 April 1788 in Calverley. Sarah was buried on 1 June 1802 at Calverley PC. Nothing is known of any children.
J Skirrow Owner would have been a family member, possibly Stephen's grand-nephew. He may have been the John Skirrow who was interred in B7 on 8 November 1874 aged 71. This was the son of Stephen and Rachel Skirrow, who are commemorated in Shipley Bethel Baptist Cemetery - Grave G6.
Interred here with Stephen and John were:
Mary Skirrow (died 3 February 1867 aged 68), born Mary Ellice, John's second wife, married in Calverley on 5 August 1849.
Hannah Skirrow (died 22 January 1875 aged 49), born Hannah Wade, the wife of William Skirrow (John Skirrow’s son), married on 16 April 1854.
William Skirrow was buried on 26 January 1888 at Owlet Road cemetery, Grave H71, along with 4 children and grandchildren.
James Butterfield was baptised in Bradford on 31 July 1896 and married Mary Hartley on 25 September 1820. They had 10 known children.
Mary Hartley / Butterfield, born abt 1794, died on 18 September 1836 aged 42, perhaps from complications giving birth to her (unnamed) son.
James Butterfield, who was a clothier, died on 22 April 1879 aged 83.
The following 3 individuals are not noted on the gravestone:
James and Mary Butterfield’s unnamed son was born and died on 26 September 1836 aged 1 week.
James’s and Mary’s daughter Rebecca was born abt 1832 and married William Shaw, a professor of music, on 11 April 1857.
Mary Isabella Shaw, their first child, died at birth on 16 September 1859.
Samuel Shaw was one of 4 other children. He was born in May 1870 and died on 1 November 1870 aged 6 months.
The parents of the following three boys were Thomas Jennings and Sarah Hillhouse, who married on 19 April 1825:
John Jennings was killed on Tuesday 20 June 1838 when he fell from the top of the Windhill Crag Quarry after being chased from his field by John Slingsby, a clothier. He had been riding a donkey owned by Slingsby. Slingsby claimed he had taken a stick and only pretended to chase the boy, who had run from the field towards the cliff edge. The inquest recorded a verdict of Accidental Death and attributed no blame to Slingsby. John Jennings was 12 years 7 months old.
Robert Jennings, John’s elder brother, was born abt 1823 and died on 3 July 1841 aged 19.
Nathan Jennings, born abt 1827, died on 20 August 1845 aged 18.
Sarah Hillhouse / Jennings, who was baptised on 18 April 1802, was one of several people in Idle summoned to appear at a local court in 1819 over a failure to pay the Poor Rates. She died on 9 August 1845 aged 42.
Thomas Jennings was born on 22 December 1802, the son of William Jennings (No 350) and Elizabeth Dunwell. He was a wool sorter. He died on 16 March 1851 aged 48.
Phebe Hillhouse was baptised in Bradford on 3 September 1820, the illegitimate daughter of Mary Greenwood of Windhill. She was listed in both the 1851 census and the Interment Book as Phoebe Greenwood. She died on 24 December 1852 aged 32.
Mary Greenwood / Hillhouse married John Hillhouse on 9 January 1839. John’s brother-in-law, Thomas Jennings (No 191, B9), was a witness. Mary died in 1867 aged 67.
The following individuals were interred at B10 but not noted on the small stone:
John Hillhouse was the brother of the Sarah Hillhouse (No 95, B9) who was married to Thomas Jennings: he was a witness at their marriage in 1825. John died in the Clayton (Bradford) Workhouse on 24 February 1875 aged 76.
Sarah Hillhouse, John’s mother, died on 24 March 1837 aged 72.
Robert Hillhouse, John’s father, may have died in Otley in 1818.
No grave is visible at C1.
There appears to be no connection between the two people interred here.
Thomas Hodgson married Mary Duckworth in 1837. By 1851 they had at least 6 children, including:
John Duckworth Hodgson, who was born in Mar 1842 and died on 11 April 1843 aged 1 year 3 months 11 days.
William Bradley, who died at Pricking Mill on 16 March 1849 aged 17, was the son of William Bradley and Martha Knapton, who were from Otley, married on 4 June 1820 and had 8 children by 1841.
C2 - WATMOUGH / HILLHOUSE / SHAW / BEECHEY / BRIGGS
There is no visible grave at C2.
There appears to be no connection between the families interred here.
John Watmough, who died on 15 December 1847 aged 66, was baptised on 22 July 1781 to Benjamin Watmough. He was a clothier.
His children included John, Henry, Edward and Elizabeth (Betty). It is less clear who their mother was, because there are few records.
Hannah Whatmuff / Watmough was baptised in Bradford on 18 June 1792 to William Watmough. She died on 12 July 1873 aged 81.
Hannah is thought to have been the wife of John Watmough largely because all the ages given in the censuses and at her burial tie back to the year 1792.
A marriage of a Hannah Whatmough to John Whatmough took place on 30 November 1829. One witness was James Whatmough, who was possiby John's brother. The late marriage date could indicate that most of John Watmough's children were borne, either by another wife, or illegitimately by Hannah herself. The following record gives some credence to the latter proposition:
Edward Watmough was probably born in 1826. A baptism record for 9 April that year gives his mother as Ann (Hannah?) Watmuff, a spinster. In the 1861 census he was a weaver aged 35 at 7 Leeds Road with his mother Anna, a widowed charwoman aged 69. He married Jane Ann Hinchliffe in Calverley on 3 January 1870 and died on 5 May 1883 aged 58.
Jane Hinchliffe was buried at Owlet Road cemetery on 12 July 1893, at Grave M67.
Annie Maria Watmough, the daughter of Edward and Jane, was born in Mar 1881 and died on 26 April 1882 aged 15 months.
Mary Elizabeth Watmuff, who was born in Sep 1860 and died on 20 April 1861 aged 11 months, was the daughter of Joseph Watmough and Mary Ann Denison (who married on 1 June 1851). Joseph, a quarryman, was the likely son of James Watmough (the brotherly witness at John and Hannah's marriage - see above) and Mary Chapman (who married in Bradford PC on 16 June 1822).
Harriet Hillhouse, who died on 25 February 1849 aged 2 days, is not in the GRO Index, but was probably the only child of Mary Greenwood (No 450, B10) and John Hillhouse, who married in Calverley on 9 January 1839.
George Wade Shaw was born in early 1855 and died on 11 October 1855 aged 8 months. He was possibly the son of George Shaw and Hannah Exley, who were from Rawdon but lived in Windhill Crag. They married in Bradford on 12 Nov 1840.
Elizabeth Beechey was born in late 1855 (there is no GRO birth record) and died on 11 May 1856 aged 7 months of erysipelas, a form of cellulitis. She was the daughter of Charles Beechey, a wool comber, and Eleanor Metcalfe Wilsdon, a dress maker, who married in Bradford on 11 July 1853. Their second child, Annie, was born in 1857 and died about 6 months later in 1858. Their daughter Clara was born in 1859 and died in 1923. There is no trace of the parents after the 1861 census of Windhill.
Nicholas Briggs was baptised on the Isle of Man on 16 March 1801. A quarryman, he married Ann Emsell, Empsel or Hempsel in Leeds on 20 July 1834. The family lived in various places in Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, but in 1851 were in Windhill Crag. Nicholas died on 7 June 1853 aged 48. He had at least 8 children, including:
Joseph Briggs, who was born in 1847 and died on 3 March 1851 aged 4.
Joseph Tomlinson Briggs, who was born in Sep 1851 and died on 18 July 1851 aged 3 weeks.
Sarah Ann Briggs, who was born in Sep 1853 and died on 13 August 1853 aged 3 weeks.
This appears to be a double grave encompassing C3 and C4.
John Bower snr, was born abt 1793 and married Sarah Pollard in Bradford PC on 13 Aug 1820. He was a wool sorter. He died on 23 May 1851 aged 58. The couple had at least 6 children:
Mary Bower / Wilcock, their first child (born abt 1821), married Thomas Wilcock on 8 May 1842 and died on 28 April 1845 aged 24.
John Bower jnr was born on 27 August 1826 and married Ann Pester on 30 August 1848. He was a wool sorter. He died on 5 August 1854 aged 28.
Hannah Bower was born abt 1828 and died on 18 December 1845 aged 17.
Martha Bower was born abt 1823 and died on 31 August 1848 aged 25.
Sarah Pollard / Bower, the widow of John Bower snr, died on 2 September 1854, aged 62: the age given in the Interment Book, 1y 9m, is clearly wrong.
Sarah Bower, who was born in Jun 1841 and died on 15 May 1859 aged 18, was the granddaughter of John Bower & Sarah Pollard by their son James, who married Sabina Burnley on 26 July 1840.
Two infants were also interred here, but not mentioned on the headstone:
William Pattison Bower, who survived only a day on 14 December 1852, was the son of John Bower jnr and Ann Pester.
Charles Henry Bower, who was born in Sep 1855 and died on 30 January 1857 aged 1 year 5 months, was the grandson of John Bower & Sarah Pollard by their son Samuel. Samuel was baptised on 15 April 1832, married Mary Flaxington on 31 August 1853 and was buried on 28 January 1874 at Owlet Road cemetery, Grave K22.
Mary Flaxington was the sister of William Flaxington (No 306) and the daughter of John Flaxington & Sarah Walker.
Mary Crabtree, who was born in Shipley on 8 March 1821, was the daughter of William Crabtree and Isabella Bottomley (married on 11 June 1798 in Bingley). She died on 26 February 1837 aged 15.
James Crabtree was born in Baildon on 1 January 1811 and died on 30 November 1838 aged 27.
William Crabtree, the father of the above children, was born abt 1777 and died on 13 June 1839 aged 62. He was a cotton spinner and clothier.
Isabellah Bottomley / Crabtree, his wife, was born abt 1775 and died on 29 November 1853 aged 79.
Thomas Crabtree, the son of Isabella and William mentioned in the Interment Book (as 'Father' and 'Mother of Thomas'), was born in East Morton on 22 October 1810. He married Mary Wood in 1833 and died in 1868.
There is no visible grave at CM.
Sarah Crabtree, the daughter of William and Isabella Crabtree (No 305, C5) married John Brayshaw at Bradford PC on 27 Jul 1829. She was born in Baildon on 11 June 1802 and died on 14 June 1854 aged 52. The couple had 3 children, two being interred here:

Mary Brayshaw, born abt 1822, died on 6 June 1853 aged 20.
John Brayshaw, their father, was born in Idle on 14 January 1807 and died on 24 August 1851 aged 44. He was a clothier.
Martha Brayshaw, his third daughter, was born in Sep 1840 and married Stephen Crabtree (son of John, grandson of William (No 43, C5) on 24 Aug 1864. She died on 21 June 1878 and was buried at Owlet Road cemetery, Grave E51.
There is no visible grave at C6.
Matthew Longley, a boat builder carpenter, was born in Leeds on 27 March 1793. He married (1) Elizabeth Goldthorp on 9 October 1815. She died in 1818; her place of interment is not known.
Matthew married (2) Elizabeth Moore in Leeds on 12 December 1819.
Joseph Longley, their son, was baptised in Hunslet on 28 January 1821. He died, unmarried, on 14 October 1842 aged 20.
Elizabeth Moore / Longley died on 8 April 1838 aged 42.
Matthew then married (3) Martha Ostler in Leeds on 23 Jun 1839.
Martha Ostler / Longley died on 13 December 1850 aged 32.

John Dawson, who was born in Heaton and baptised on 3 March 1813, was a quarryman, who married Ruth Bradley on 5 June 1837 at Calverley PC.
Five of their children were interred at C7, though there are no inscriptions on the gravestone:
Mary Dawson was born in Jun 1844 and died on 7 January 1849 aged 5.
Ruth Dawson was born in Jun 1849 and died on 16 May 1851 aged 2.
Martin Dawson was born in Jun 1845 and died on 22 May 1851 aged 6.

Elizabeth Dawson was born in Sep 1839 and died on 30 October 1858 aged 19.
Four children are mentioned on the gravestone:
Abraham Dawson was baptised in Idle on 21 May in 1834 and died on 20 May 1836 aged 2. He was the son of Martin Dawson, a farmer, and Ellen Firth, who were the grandparents of Mary, Ruth, Martin, Sarah and Elizabeth.
Martin Dawson’s unnamed son was still born on 10 July 1836, according to an entry in the Unbaptised Infants Interred section and a note inside the back cover of the Interment Book.
The two following infants were Martin and Ellen's grandchildren by their son Benjamin (baptised 4 December 1825, died 12 January 1912), who married Sarah Deacon on 6 November 1859:
Ellen Dawson was born in Jun 1863 and died on 1 Janaury 1864 aged 8 months.
Samuel Dawson was born in Jun 1861 and died on 17 February 1865 aged 3 years 8 months.
Additional information:

Wilcock child, noted in the Unbaptised Infants Interred section of the Interment Book between entries for 1838 and 1841, was stillborn.
George Wilcock was the son of Hannah Hargreave and John Wilcock. He was baptised on 24 July 1808 at Bradford PC. A cloth manufacturer, he married Franny Marshall on 2 September 1838 in Calverley. After she died, George's business went to pieces and he was bankrupted. He was brought from prison to the preliminary hearing on 14 Sept 1848. His mother Hannah, described as a pauper, filed as a creditor and claimed board and lodging on the house they shared, but which was rented by George from Sammy Cowling. In 1857 he had to convey all his possessions to his creditors. He was finally discharged from bankruptcy, having had debts of £779, on 17 June 1865.
He died in Windhill on 10 April 1884 aged 76.
Franny Marshall / Wilcock, or Ann as she was known, died on 19 November 1845 aged 36.

There appears to be no familial connection between the Parkers and the Flaxingtons, though the two families were neighbours in Windhill.
William Flaxington, born abt 1833, was the son of John Flaxington and Sarah Walker. He died on 3 December 1854 aged 21.
John Flaxington, William’s brother, was born abt 1836 and died on 9 January 1855 aged 19.

John died in 1871 aged 70. Sarah died in 1855 aged 54. They were interred at Owlet Road cemetery, Grave K10.
Additional information:
William and John were nephews of Benjamin Flaxington, their father’s younger brother, who was born in Shipley around 1812 and married Grace Clayton in 1830. He worked in worsted mills as an overlooker. After 1851 the family must have gone to Aberdeen to stay with his younger brother James, who was working as a weaver at Crombies, a mill at Grandholm that produced premium quality woollen cloths.
It is presumed that Benjamin worked at Crombies and was sent to Germany, then Russia and Ireland on company business. In 1855, whilst in Hamburg, Grace, at the age of 43, gave birth to a daughter, Ellen. Grace may have died then, or shortly afterwards.

Benjamin was the Minister at Baildon’s Wesleyan Chapel (in Westgate) and also did stints at Bingley’s Methodist Chapel (in Herbert St) and Shipley’s Wesleyan Providence Methodist Chapel. It is thought that burial provision at the latter was limited, prompting some members to buy plots in Windhill’s Wesleyan Burial Ground.
Benjamin Gartside must have owned grave G3 and commissioned the headstone, even though by 1851 he had moved to Colne, Lancashire. He died in Fylde in 1881.

Ann Parker eventually got married, to John Britton, a clothier, on 12 April 1830. At the 1841 census, he appears to have adopted Frances and Jane: their surnames were given as Britton.
At the 1851 census, Ann’s daughter Frances was still single and was living with her uncle William. She used the Parker surname. When she married Joseph Hewitt on 9 June of that year, she continued to call herself Parker. No father was named on the marriage certificate.

Row I - the notation used for Rows A to H should be ignored: instead, follow the notation overlain on the Plan of the Burial Ground.
11/1 - FELL
This is a small headstone that was probably originally at grave 11/1 in the Lower Burial Ground.
Robert Fell may have been born in 1791 in Leeds. A clothier, he married Sarah Tillotson (No 469, E2) on 25 February 1823 in Calverley. They had one child, Margaret, whose details are noted under E2. He died of cholera n 12 October 1849, aged 62.
4/2 - WHATMOUGH
This is a small headstone that was probably originally at plot 4/2 in the Lower Burial Ground.
William Whatmough was the son of James and Grace Whatmough. According to the inscription he died on 26 August 1851 aged 11 years. According to his death certificate he died of smallpox aged 101/2 years. The certificate noted that he had not been vaccinated.
No birth or census records have been found for William Whatmough. However, a William Brook was born in Windhill on 3 October 1840 to Grace Brook, who was stated to be a widow. As no father was named, it was clearly an illegitimate birth. Grace was born in Morton (near Keighley) in 1800 and seems to have married John Lee, a mason, in 1819. He probably died in the mid-1830s, after daughter Sarah was born in 1834. The 1841 Windhill census listed Grace Lee with her 2-year-old son William Lee. But when she married James Whatmough in Calverley on 23 April 1849, it was as Grace Brook, a spinster. By the 1851 census William, now aged 10, still had the Lee surname. But when he died later that same year, he was given his stepfather's Whatmough name on his death certificate and tomb. His mother Grace died on 3 Mar 1857 aged 59 and was interred in the Lower Burial Ground, Grave 5 - 1. By the 1861 census, her widowed husband James was a besom (broom) maker. Tellingly, the other resident at the address (27 Old Hall St, Windhill) was his "son", Joshua Brook, aged 17. James Whatmough probably died in 1867 aged 69.
There is no inscription for the following infant:
Emma Whatmough was born on 9 July 1851 to Joseph Whatmough and Mary Ann Denison, who married on 1 Jun 1851.
James Whatmough, described as a labourer, was the groom's father.
Emma died in Shipley of convulsions on 11 August 1851 aged 5 weeks.
