Bateson's Hagge sale 1616/1617

 

[the extract below is taken from the top third of a manuscript in the West Yorkshire Archive at: WYL500/138. It is in rather poor condition in places. Doubtful interpretations have been rendered in italics]

This Indenture made the twentieth day of March in the thirteenth yeare of the reigne of our Sovereigne Lord, James by the grace of god King of England France & Ireland, defender of the faith etc and of Scotland the nine & fortieth Betwene Francis Gledston of Westmarton in Craven in the county of Yorke yeoman & Isabell now his wife sister & heiress of Andrewe Bateson of Wyndhill within the Lordshippe of Idle in the said county deceassed while he lyved was sonne & heire of Christopher Bateson late of Wyndhill aforesaid deceased of thone partie and George Nelson of Idle aforesaide in the said county tanner of thother partie. Witnesseth That the said Francis Gledstone & Isabell his wife for & in consideration of the some of twenty & six pounds of lawfull money of England to them in hande at or before then falling & deliver of these presents by the said George Nelson well & truely contented & payd whereof & wherewith hath then the said Francis Gledstone & Isabell his wife do hereby acknowledge themselves & eyther of them to be fully satisfied & payd & thereof & of everie part and parcell thereof do clearly acquitte & discharge the said George Nelson his heirs executors admistrators & assignes & everie of them for ever by these presents and for divers other good causes & considerations to them the said Francis & Isabel thereunto movinge, Have granted barganed sould aliened & confirmed and by this Indenture for & from them their heirs & assigns & everie of them do fully, freely & absolutely grant bargane sell aliene & confirme unto the said George Nelson his heirs and Assigns forever All that close of land pasture & wood comonly called Batesons Hagge conteyning by estymation fyve acres be it more or less with thappurtinances lying and beinge in Idle aforesaid in the said county of Yorke now in the tenure or occupacon of the said George Nelson or his Assignes, And also all & singler wayes pastures waters watercourses comons libties profitte comodities & easemente whatsoever To the said close called Batesons Hagg manywise belonginge or appertayninge or to or with the same now or comonly demysed used enjoyed or occupyed as pte parcell or member thereof And with said close called Batesons Hagge was heretofore parcell of certayne woods called the Mayne Woods of Idle aforesaid & was heretofore lymitted & allotted to the said Christopher Bateson deceased for A pte of his moytie of the moytie of Thirtyone pts and the Twentith pte of one pte of all & singler the woods and underwoods and of the Soyle & ground of the same comonly called the Mayne Woods & outwoods of Idle, All the same woods in Three hundreth Thirty and six pte to be devided And the Reversion & reversions of all the foresaid premisses by these presents menconed to be barganed & sould with their appurtenances & of everie pte & parcell thereof And all theyr the said Francis Gledstone & Isabell his wife & eyther of theyr estate & estates righte titles use & uses intereste possession reversion & reversions Remayder & Remaynders claymes & demannds whatsoever of in & to the said close of land pasture & wood called Batesons Hagge and all & singler other the premisses herein before menconed to be hereby barganed sould with all theyr appurtenance & of m & to everie pte parcell thereof and also all & singler dedes charters Evidence Escrips mynymtes & wrytinge whatsoever touchinge or concerninge the premisses or any pte & parcell thereof onely and - for - copyes of all their dedes charters Evidence Escrips mynytes & wrytinges whatsoever touchinge or concerninge the premisses or any pte & parcell thereof ...........

Lease and Release
From John Hobson of Leeds, yeoman, to Walter Calverley of Calverley esq., of closes called Sinder Carrs, Sinder Carr Ing, Bateson Hagg alias Nelson Hagg in Idle adjoining the lands of said Walter, sometime in possession of William Dawson, then of Joseph Wilson.
22-23 Aug 1710
All those severall closes or parcells of land meadows thereafter or commonly known by the names of the Sinder Carr the Sinder Carr Ing & Bateson Hagge alias Nelson Hagg being the sometime heretofore divided into Six Closes & containing in all about Sixteen acres with all their appurtenenances lying & being in Idle in the said County of Yorke and adjoining on some part thereof unto the lands of the said Walter Calverley and which were Sometime heretofore in the possession of one William Dawson or his assigns but now are in the Tenure or occupation of Joseph Wilson his assignee or assignes and which were of a long time past & so continued the Inheritance of James Hobson father of the said John Hobson to whom the said John Hobson is son & heir as well as claimeth the same by gift or devise from his said late father Together with all and singular wayes waters watercourses wastes wastgrounds & woody groundes Comons Comon of pasture & Turbary woods underwoods Mines quarryes libertyes priviledges Comodityes whatesoever to the said premisses or any part therof in any wise belonging or apptaining or therewith now or comonly devised used enjoyed or occupyed or as part parcell or member thereof or of any part thereof had reputed taken or known ……
